Living in Florida is all about sunshine, beaches, and maybe the occasional manatee sighting. But if you’re not careful, it’s also about sunburns. Trust me, nothing ruins a beach day like feeling crispy and red while trying to enjoy your ice cream cone. I spent a spring break before I moved here hiding in the shade and shaking in the air conditioning. My family still talks about it.

Lucky for you, I’ve done the hard work (aka testing so much sunscreen) to figure out what actually works in Florida’s intense sun. Whether you’re hitting the beach, kayaking through mangroves, or just driving through town (yes, even that requires SPF here), these sunscreens have got your back—and your face, and your arms… you get the idea.

Why Sunscreen is Your BFF in Florida

First things first: Florida sun is no joke. Even if you’re sitting in the shade sipping a Key Lime Mojito (which, by the way, I highly recommend—check out my Key West post for the details), those UV rays are coming for you. A good sunscreen isn’t optional here—it’s a survival tool.

My Favorite Sunscreens for Every Situation

1. The All-Day Beach Buddy

EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46
I’ve been using this sunscreen since my dermatologist recommended it. It’s lightweight, doesn’t clog pores, and stays put even when you’re sweating buckets. Bonus: it works great under makeup as a primer. I use the untinted, but I know the tinted version is very popular as well.

2. For the Kids Who Refuse to Sit Still

Blue Lizard Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50
The first time I tried this sunscreen I’d lived in Florida for only a couple weeks and took my kids to the Naples Zoo, with no sunscreen, in August. I bought a tiny bottle of this at the gift shop and it smelled amazing. Since I bought it at the zoo I knew it would be reef safe and ocean friendly as well. That tiny bottle was so expensive in the gift shop that I came home and ordered a bigger (less expensive) bottle on Amazon. It’s also gentle on my eczema prone kids skin.

3. Face First, Always

Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40
This one’s perfect for your face—no greasy feeling, no white cast, and it works great under makeup. It’s basically invisible and stays put all day. This is more than a vacation sunscreen, its a every day essential.

4. Budget-Friendly but Mighty

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch SPF 70
You don’t have to spend a fortune to protect your skin. This sunscreen is affordable, easy to find, and offers heavy-duty protection. Just slather it on and enjoy Florida without worrying about frying. It’s super lightweight and always in my beach bag.

Pro Tips for Surviving the Florida Sun

  1. Reapply, Reapply, Reapply. Don’t let the SPF 50 on the bottle fool you—Florida sun is crazy strong. Set a timer and reapply every two hours, especially if you’re swimming or sweating. I usually apply the kids sunscreen before we leave the house, when we get there, and when we take a snack break.
  2. Wear a Hat. Bonus points if it’s cute. I’ve linked some of my favorites in my Florida Fashion Finds post.
  3. Hydrate. Sunscreen won’t protect you from dehydration, so chug that water like you’re training for a half-marathon. Bonus points if you’re using electrolytes.
