Get ready for some fun in the sun as we explore the best beaches (IMO) in Southwest Florida! Grab your sunglasses and flip-flops, because I’m going to show you the best places to play in the sand and swim in the ocean. Whether you want to hang out where the locals go or visit popular spots with lots of shops, I’ve got you covered. Grab your sunscreen and let’s get started!
Sanibel Island Beaches

Sanibel Island, known for its shell-strewn shores, offers a calm and unspoiled coastal escape. Its beautiful beaches, including Bowman’s Beach and Blind Pass Beach are perfect for long walks, shelling, and birdwatching. Bowman’s offers more kid friendly beach vibe while Blind Pass is amazing for fishing and shelling. Blind Pass does have a drop off and often a strong current so its best for older kiddos. Sanibel has a relaxed atmosphere and is a great choice. The island, like many areas, is still very much in a recovery period as homes, condos, and businesses continue to be rebuilt. However, I wanted to make sure to include it on this list because the island is still such a beautiful and special place. Accommodations are limited right now, but a quick day trip is worth it.
Captiva Island

Adjacent to Sanibel Island, Captiva Island offers a slightly more secluded and exclusive beach experience. With its breathtaking sunsets and vibrant sea life, is a must-visit spot. It is probably my favorite beach, as evident by how many pictures I post on Instagram. Enjoy strolling along the shoreline, building sandcastles, or simply unwinding while soaking in the island’s natural beauty. The water color is unmatched! Be sure to stop by Boops (next door to the Bubble Room) for ice cream and their famous orange crunch cake on the way home, or the Mucky Duck for a cold beer and pub food.
Naples Beaches

The Naples area is renowned for its upscale coastal communities and picturesque beaches. Vanderbilt Beach, with its wide sandy shores and inviting waters, is a popular choice for families and sunbathers. A parking garage about a block from the beach offers ample parking for beach goers, although it fills up fast! For a more serene and private experience, Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park offers miles of untouched beaches and nature trails. It has recently reopened post-hurricane and is welcoming visitors once again.
Barefoot Beach Preserve and Bonita Beach Park

Nestled between Bonita Springs and Naples, the Barefoot Beach Preserve is a hidden gem known for its natural beauty and abundant wildlife. With its scenic trails, diverse ecosystems, and secluded stretches of sand, this beach is perfect for nature enthusiasts and those seeking a peaceful coastal retreat. A little farther down Bonita Beach road you’ll find Bonita Beach Park. While still closed and awaiting rebuilding, the parking lot next to it is open. Here you’ll be close to Doc’s Beach house, offering food trucks and outdoor seating while the lower half is being rebuilt. Bonita Jet Ski offers rentals and parasailing from this location as well.
Lovers Key State Park
Lovers Key State Park, located between Fort Myers Beach and Bonita Springs, is a true paradise for outdoor lovers. Accessible by a scenic boardwalk, the park offers pristine beaches, mangrove forests, and ample opportunities for kayaking, wildlife spotting, and sunbathing. It was badly damage in Fall of 2022, but I wanted to include it because it is such a special place. Keep an eye on the Facebook page ‘Friends of Lovers Key’ to stay updated on the rebuilding projects. You can also enjoy this video I filmed a few weeks before Hurricane Ian to see the area in all its glory. I, and so many visitors, look forward to enjoying one of the best beaches in Southwest Florida again.
Fort Myers Beach

For those seeking a vibrant and lively beach experience, Fort Myers Beach is a popular choice. While this beach was arguably the hardest hit by the hurricane, the strength of the residents and businesses is evident. With its bustling atmosphere, food trucks filling in for beachside restaurants currently rebuilding, and an abundance of water sports activities, such as parasailing and jet skiing, Fort Myers Beach offers endless entertainment options. Parking lots are open and many are free. Beach chairs and umbrellas can be found for rent up and down the beach.
Gasparilla Island State Park

Situated near Boca Grande, Gasparilla Island State Park showcases the natural beauty of Southwest Florida. With its uncrowded beaches, crystal-clear waters, and fascinating wildlife, this hidden gem is a haven for nature lovers and those looking for a quiet and unspoiled beach getaway. Don’t forget to stop by The Pink Pony for a cold ice cream treat after a beach day. Additionally, if you’re looking for a fun fishing experience Boca Grande is known as the Tarpon Fishing capital of the world! There’s so much to do on in this beautiful area.
Southwest Florida is a coastal haven that caters to all beachgoers’ desires, from those seeking tranquility to those looking for excitement and adventure. The region’s stunning beaches, each with its unique charm, offer an unforgettable experience for visitors. Whether you’re collecting seashells on Sanibel Island, witnessing captivating sunsets on Captiva Island, or exploring the vibrant atmosphere of Fort Myers Beach, Southwest Florida has the best beaches sure to leave you with cherished memories of your tropical getaway. Lindsay, what’s the status of bonita beach and tennis? Still working on it? Thanks, jeff
Hi Jeff! No tennis courts and pools are still being worked on but it’s up and running. Renters have been in since March 1.
